Brief History of Cheyenne, Wyoming
Wyoming State Capitol Building, Cheyenne, WyomingGeneral Grenville M. Dodge chose this spot in July 5, 1867 as a point where the Union Pacific Railroad would cross Crow Creek, which is a tributary of the South Platte River.

Originally named "Crow Creek Crossing", it later became known as "Cheyenne", named for the Cheyenne Nation, which is one of the most prominent Great Plains tribes.

Cheyenne grew rapidly when the Union Pacific Railroad reached Cheyenne on November 13, 1867, and it quickly gained the nickname "The Magic City of the Plains".  Fort D. A. Russell was then established later in 1867 about three miles west of the town, and later this fort became Francis E. Warren Air Force Base.

The Wyoming State Capitol Building that you see today was built between the years of 1886 and 1890, and additional improvements were made in 1917.

Before Wyoming became a state in 1890, the Wyoming Stock Growers Association would meet in Cheyenne at the historic "Cheyenne Club", and was supposedly acting as the interim government for the Wyoming Territory.  Many of their laws and regulations actually became state laws once Wyoming achieved statehood.

The Town of Cheyenne Wyoming truly captures "The Spirit of the West", and we highly recommend that you spend some time in this wonderful Western town and discover all of its treasures.  Further down the page are some of the major attractions that we suggest that you visit and explore during your stay in Cheyenne Wyoming.
