Ahern Peak
Ahern Peak (8,749 feet) is located about 6 miles north of Granite Park Chalet, and is directly above Ahern Pass on the Highline Trail.  We parked our truck at Logan Pass and started heading north on the Highline Trail, and were over 13 miles into the northern Lewis Range by the time we summitted Ahern Peak.  It was a 26 mile day but every step was absolutely worth it because of the amazing views from the summit.

Ahern Peak gives you a great view of the remote northern region of the Lewis Range, which includes the Stoney Indian Area and Mount Cleveland, the tallest peak in Glacier Park.   And there is a tremendous view of Helen Lake, which is over 3,500 vertical feet directly below the summit!

A view of the Mountain...
          Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
This is the famous east wall of Ahern Peak.  It drops 3,500 vertical feet to the shore of Helen Lake, which is our of view to the right of this photo.  It's a thrill to look over the edge of this great wall.  Ahern Glacier can be seen to the upper right.

This is a view of Ahern Mountain from the summit of Crowsfeet Mountain.  We are facing straight west.  Notice the large Ahern Glacier to the right of Ahern Peak.

This is a view of Ahern Peak from the Highline Trail.  We are facing northeast.  Ahern Pass is to the left of the peak.

Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
In this photo, we marked where we walked up to the summit from Ahern Pass.  It's an easy hike requiring no technical skills whatsoever, and the views are fantastic.

Views from the Summit...

Ahern Peak provides rare glimpses of the northern Lewis and Livingston Ranges. The camera is facing northwest.

Helen Lake, Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
This is a view of Helen Lake from the summit of Ahern Peak.  The lake is over 3,500 vertical feet below us!!!

Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
These spires are known as the Stoney Indian Peaks, and are part of the extremely remote Northern Lewis Range.  They rarely see people.

Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
Here's another view of the Northern Lewis Range.  These mountains are extremely rugged and rarely visited.

Ahern Glacier, Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
The glacier in this photo is Ahern Glacier, which is just north of Ahern Peak.

The lake far below in the valley is Elizabeth Lake.  (We are facing northeast.) The reddish area to the upper right is Red Gap Pass, and the upper left portion of the photo shows a glimpse of the famous Belly River Area.  Notice Chief Mountain peeking over the top of the mountains on the skyline.

The tallest mountain to the right with a snow field on it is Mount Cleveland, the highest peak in the park.  We are facing straight north in this photo.

Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
This photo shows the peaks to the south of Ahern Mountain.

Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
Here's Shannon looking to the south.  The peak to her right is Heaven's Peak.

Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
The tall, tan colored peak to the left is Mount Henkel. (We are facing southeast.)  To the right of Henkel, deep in the valley, is where the Many Glacier Hotel is located.  The jagged wall in the foreground is called the Pinnacle Wall, which you can cleary see from the hotel.

Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
The mountains in the far distance of part of the Livingston Range.  These are also EXTREMELY remote mountains.  Just on the other side of them is the North Fork Area, which includes the Bowman Lake Area and Kintla Lake Area. (The camera is facing northwest.)

Ahern Peak, Glacier National Park
This is a unique view of the Iceberg Lake Area (facing south) from the summit of Ahern Peak.  Iceberg Lake is 3,000 feet directly below Mount Wilbur and Iceberg Peak!
