Built in 1834, Fort Hall was initially a fur trading post, as was many of the forts throughout the West.   Built by the inventor and businessman by the name of Nathaniel Jarvis Wyeth, Fort Hall was sold to the fur trading giant by the name of the Hudson Bay Company in 1837.  Once the area became officially a part of the United States Territory in 1846, Fort Hall became a valuable station for the emigrants heading for Oregon and California along both the Oregon Trail and California Trail in the 1850s.

Approximately 280,000 emigrants passed through Fort Hall, which marked the spot where a long and tiring 500 mile stretch from the East ended. This initial 500 mile stretch included one main trail where near Fort Hall the trail diverged into the Oregon Trail and the California Trail.  This location where the trails diverged was a perfect resting area for the weary travelers before they headed further West, which made Fort Hall invaluable to these emigrants.

In the 1860s, Fort Hall became an important post for the freight lines, mail and overland stage that serviced the mining camps and towns throughout the mining frontier.  Because of this change in rolls, in 1870 a New Fort Hall was built which was located approximately 25 miles northeast of the original location.  The mail objective of the New Fort Hall was to protect the stagecoaches carrying mail and travelers heading to the Northwest.

Considered to be the most valuable trading post in the Snake River Valley, Fort Hall was included withing the Treaty of 1867 involving the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.  With this treaty marked the end of both Fort Halls (new and old), and no buildings remain at either of the two sites.  In 1961, the site of Old Fort Hall was designated a National Historic Landmark, and the New Fort Hall site is now found on the National Register of Historic Places.
