Grinnell Mountain
This is a view of Grinnell Mountain from the Swiftcurrent Pass Trail near Red Rock Falls.
Grinnell Mountain (8,851 feet) was a great climb, but it was really, really, really smokey that day because of a forest fire near Whitefish Montana to the west. Smoke is our worst enemy when trying to photograph from a summit. But we did our best...
Grinnell Mountain is located in the Many Glacier Area, and is centrally located between the Swiftcurrent Valley and the Grinnell Valley. It provides great views all around, and we are definitely going to climb it again on a clear day so we can get some awe-inspiring shots!
Grinnell Mountain is the sharp matterhorn to the left. We took this photo from Mount Henkel as we faced southwest. Henkel is just above the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn. Just to the right of Grinnell Mountain is Swiftcurrent Glacier. Bullhead lake is the larger lake you can see far below in the Swiftcurrent Valley.
Views from the Summit
Here we are on the summit of Grinnell Mountain. (The camera is facing north.) The mountain to the left is Swiftcurrent Mountain. The mountains in the far distance are part of the Livingston Range, which is a very remote area of Glacier Park. As we stand on the summit of Grinnell Mountain, we are four thousand vertical feet above our truck parked at the Many Glacier Hotel.

Here's a good view of Mount Gould and the iconic Grinnell Glacier. Notice the icebergs floating in Upper Grinnell Lake. The water from the upper lake then travels down the mountain and flows into Grinnell Lake. From there, the water flows into Lake Josephine, then Swiftcurrent Lake (which is where the Many Glacier Hotel is located). The water then flows into Lake Sherbourne, and eventually ends up in the Arctic Ocean!

We are facing straight east. The long ridge eventually ends at Grinnell Point, which is a prominent feature of the skyline from the deck at the Many Glacier Hotel. The lake in the distance is Lake Sherbourne. Notice the smoke-filled prairie far to the east.
Grinnell Mountain is located perfectly to get a good view of the Grinnell Glacier Area.
Behind Shannon is Swiftcurrent Glacier. (The camera is facing northwest.) Notice Swiftcurrent Pass just to the north of the glacier. This connects the Many Glacier Area with the Highline Trail to the west. The Granite Park Chalet is only about a mile from the Pass.
Every-so-often the smoke would clear and we'd get a better glimpse of our surroundings. The large peak to the right of Shannon is Mount Wilbur. The camera is facing north, into the Swiftcurrent Valley.
We are looking forward to climbing Grinnell Mountain again on a clear day!
