Arches National Park is one of the most unique and recognizable national parks in the American Southwest. Located just outside Moab, Utah, the park is famous for its incredible concentration of natural sandstone arches, towering rock formations, narrow fins, balanced rocks, and deep red canyons. More than 2,000 documented natural arches are found within the park, making this one of the largest concentrations of natural stone arches in the world.
The park’s most famous feature is Delicate Arch, a 52-foot-tall freestanding arch that has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Utah. Other major attractions include Landscape Arch, Double Arch, Balanced Rock, The Windows, Turret Arch, Park Avenue, and the Devils Garden area. Many of these formations can be reached by short hikes or scenic pullouts, while others require longer hikes into the backcountry.
One of the best ways to experience Arches National Park is by driving the park’s main scenic road, which climbs from the entrance near Moab into a remarkable landscape of red sandstone formations. Along the way, numerous overlooks, trailheads, and short side roads provide access to many of the park’s most popular attractions.
Arches National Park is especially impressive because the scenery changes constantly. Around nearly every bend in the road or trail, another unusual rock formation appears. Utah’s “Mighty 5” refers to the five national parks located throughout southern Utah: Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, and Zion. Together, these parks showcase some of the most remarkable desert scenery in the United States, including natural arches, towering cliffs, deep canyons, hoodoos, domes, mesas, and colorful sandstone formations.

More Than 2,000 Natural Arches: Arches National Park contains more than 2,000 documented natural sandstone arches, one of the greatest concentrations of natural arches anywhere in the world.
Delicate Arch: The park’s most famous landmark, Delicate Arch, stands about 52 feet tall and has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Utah.
Landscape Arch: Landscape Arch stretches more than 290 feet from base to base and is one of the longest natural rock arches in the world.
A High Desert Park: Elevations in Arches National Park range from roughly 4,000 feet to more than 5,600 feet, so temperatures can vary considerably throughout the year.
Rock Formations Everywhere: In addition to arches, the park contains sandstone fins, towers, pinnacles, balanced rocks, and deep canyons.
Balanced Rock Is Huge: Balanced Rock rises about 128 feet above the surrounding landscape. The massive boulder on top is roughly the size of three school buses.
Arches Are Still Changing: The park’s arches are constantly being shaped by erosion, freezing and thawing, gravity, and weather. Some arches eventually collapse while new openings slowly form.
Arches Became a National Park in 1971: The area was originally established as Arches National Monument in 1929 before becoming a national park on November 12, 1971.
Park Size: Arches National Park covers approximately 76,679 acres, or about 120 square miles, of southeastern Utah’s high desert landscape.
Located Near Moab: The entrance to Arches National Park is only a few miles north of Moab, Utah, making Moab the primary gateway town for the park.
