The hike to the Huckleberry Lookout on the top of Huckleberry Mountain (elevation 6,593) in Glacier National Park is not on the list of our Favorite Glacier Park Hikes, but it definitely provides splendid views in all directions, including the remote and towering Livingston Range to the east.  We strongly recommend that you be in adequate physical condition before attempting this hike, as the Huckleberry Lookout Trail climbs a steady 3,403 vertical feet in 6 miles as it reaches the summit of Huckleberry Mountain and the Huckleberry Lookout.  This Glacier Park hike is located on the west side of Glacier National Park, near the western boundary.

Finding The Trailhead

The trailhead to the Huckleberry Lookout Trail in Glacier National Park is approximately 6 miles north of Apgar Village, along the Camas Road.  To get to the Camas Road, simply head on the road that heads north from Apgar Village.

The Camas Road is also the road that takes you to the Outside North Fork Road and eventually to the North Fork / Polebridge Area of Glacier National Park.  The Huckeberry Lookout Trailhead parking area is to your left as you're driving northward, and it is well marked with a large trailhead sign.

The Huckleberry Lookout Trail in Glacier National Park doesn't waste any time gaining in elevation.  In fact, you're climbing steadily pretty much the entire way.  The trail works its way up the north bank of McGee Creek through a lush lodgepole pine forest, and it steadily climbs to the summit of Huckleberry Mountain.  The higher you get, the better the view, and you might be lucky enough to see beargrass in bloom as you hike up this steep slope.

The Huckleberry Lookout Trail steadily climbs up the north slope above McGee Creek as it heads toward the ridge to the west.  If your timing is right, you'll get to see beargrass in bloom on this Glacier National Park hike.

As you get higher in elevation, the views begin to get better and better. The great Livingston Range begins to appear as the trail works its way up to the south ridgeline of Huckleberry Mountain in Glacier Park.

The Huckleberry Lookout Trail in Glacier National Park eventually reaches the south ridge of Huckleberry Mountain, and it is here you may get to see some incredible wildflowers if your timing is right. 

After climbing up the north bank of McGee Creek, the trail finally reaches the south ridge of Huckleberry Mountain.  The view here becomes more impressive, as you can now see a large portion of the amazing Livingston Range of Glacier National Park to the east.  If your timing is right, there will be an abundance of wildflowers all along this vivid green ridge as the trail begins to head straight north towards the summit of Huckleberry Mountain, which is now only 1.5 miles away.

All the way around the summit of Huckleberry Mountain, you'll find that the views are very nice, and if you walk up to the top of the Huckleberry Lookout, the views are even better.  The lookout is usually manned, so there will probably be someone living in it, so make sure to respect his or her privacy.  Most of the lookout personnel  that we have met throughout Glacier Park are very nice and are very willing to let you climb up to the observation deck so you can really enjoy the views.....

The view to the southwest is of the North Fork Flathead River and the North Fork Road.  The river marks the boundary between Glacier National Park and the Flathead National Forest.  This section of the North Fork Flathead River is a popular place for fishermen and rafters, especially further to the south, which is known as the "Flathead Wild and Scenic River".  To the south of this area, the North Fork Flathead River meets up with the Middle Fork Flathead to create the mighty Flathead River, about 7 miles north of the town of Coram.

The view to the north from the observation deck of the Huckleberry Lookout gives you a good look at the North Fork Area (a.k.a. Polebridge Area) of Glacier National Park.

The view to the north is of the North Fork Area of Glacier National Park.  Also known as the Polebridge Area, from the Huckleberry Lookout you can see the North Fork Flathead River winding down this vast valley, and you can also see portions of the Outside North Fork Road that takes visitors to the historic Polebridge MercantilePolebridge Ranger Station and Entrance, and further on to Bowman Lake and Kintla Lake.

Looking to the northwest you'll see a lush green slope where hikers like to eat their lunch.

Looking in the northwest direction while standing on the observation deck of the Huckleberry Lookout in Glacier National Park, you will see a gorgeous green meadow below you where hikers like to enjoy a nice lunch as they take in their surroundings.  You will also see the remaining ridge of the Apgar Mountains.

The view to the east is dominated by the expansive Livingston Range.  These peaks are among the most remote and least visited places in all of Glacier National Park.

As you look straight west from the summit of Huckleberry Mountain and the Huckleberry Lookout in Glacier National Park, you will see the expansive Livingston Range as it dominates the entire skyline to the east. The Livingston Range begins just north of the Going To The Sun Road near the Avalanche Campground and the Trail of the Cedars, all the way to Canada.  The peaks in this impressive mountain range are extremely remote and rugged, and are seldom visited by humans.

The view to the south from the observation deck of the Huckleberry Lookout reveals the trail that you came up on along the south ridge of Huckleberry Mountain in Glacier National Park.  Huckleberry Mountain is part of a chain of mountains known as the Apgar Mountains.

As you look toward the south from the summit of Huckleberry Mountain and the Huckleberry Lookout, you will see the ridgeline portion of the Huckleberry Trail, as well as a portion of the Apgar Mountains which Huckleberry Mountain is a part of.

Important Suggestion:  

Bring Your Own Water!  There is no water source along the Huckleberry Lookout Trail, and water is not available at the Lookout!
