North Cascades Scenic Highway

The North Cascades Scenic Highway (State Route 20) begins on its western end at Sedro-Woolley, Washington, and travels approximately 140 miles across the North Cascades to the Methow Valley, which includes the gateway town of Winthrop. From Sedro-Woolley, the highway follows the Skagit River east through communities such as Concrete, Rockport and Marblemount before entering the spectacular mountain country of the North Cascades. The highway eventually climbs over Washington Pass and descends toward Winthrop.

One of the first major attractions is the North Cascades Visitor Center near Newhalem, where exhibits help explain the North Cascades National Park Service Complex. Nearby Newhalem also provides access to short walks, historic hydroelectric facilities and the Skagit River corridor.

Continuing east, Gorge Creek Falls Overlook is another worthwhile stop. A short interpretive trail provides views into the narrow gorge, along with views toward Gorge Lake and Gorge Dam.

A few miles east of the Gorge Creek Falls Overlook is the trailhead to Pyramid Lake. This provides an opportunity for visitors to hike through a classic lush green North Cascades forest. The lake itself is not impressive, but the hike to the lake, through the forest, is quite rewarding.

Farther along the highway is the spectacular Diablo Lake Overlook, one of the most popular scenic stops on the entire drive. From this large turnout, visitors can look across the striking turquoise waters of Diablo Lake toward the surrounding mountains.

Beyond Diablo Lake, the highway passes the Happy Creek Forest Walk, followed by several viewpoints overlooking Ross Lake and the surrounding North Cascades.

Highway 20 then begins climbing toward Rainy Pass, where visitors will find the trailhead for the Rainy Lake Trail and popular Maple Pass Loop. Farther east is the Blue Lake Trailhead, which provides access to the beautiful Blue Lake Trail beneath the dramatic Liberty Bell Mountain area.

The final major roadside attraction is Washington Pass Overlook, where a short paved trail leads to outstanding views of Liberty Bell Mountain, Early Winters Creek Valley and the surrounding peaks.

From Washington Pass, Highway 20 drops into the Methow Valley and reaches Winthrop, the main gateway town on the eastern side of the North Cascades. With lodging, restaurants, shops and visitor services, Winthrop makes an excellent beginning or ending point for this incredible drive across the North Cascades.
