North Cascades National Park Visitor Center
The North Cascades Visitor Center is located near Newhalem, Washington, along the North Cascades Scenic Highway, which is Washington State Route 20 (WA-20). The visitor center sits just south of the highway near the Newhalem Campground and is one of the best places to stop for information before exploring the surrounding mountains, trails, lakes and scenic overlooks.
Inside the visitor center, you will find exhibits that explain the natural and cultural history of the North Cascades, including information about the area's glaciers, wildlife, forests and rugged mountain landscape. Park rangers are typically available to answer questions, provide current trail and road conditions, and help visitors plan their time in the park complex. Maps, brochures and other educational materials are also available.
One of the highlights of the visitor center is the short network of walking trails nearby. These paths lead through the surrounding forest and offer a nice introduction to the lush environment of the western North Cascades. There are also viewpoints where visitors can get a better look at the surrounding mountains and forested valley.
The North Cascades Visitor Center is typically open from late spring through early fall, with the main visitor season generally running from around May through September or early October. Hours and opening dates can vary from year to year depending on staffing, weather and seasonal conditions.
We recommend stopping here early in your visit, especially if you plan to hike or drive deeper into the North Cascades National Park Service Complex.
