Washington Pass

Washington Pass Overlook is one of the most impressive scenic stops along the North Cascades Scenic Highway. Located near Washington Pass at about 5,477 feet above sea level, this overlook sits near the highest point along Highway 20 and provides outstanding views of the rugged North Cascades. The overlook is located near milepost 162, about 30 miles west of Winthrop, making it a popular stop for visitors traveling between the Methow Valley and the western side of the North Cascades.

A short spur road leaves Highway 20 and leads about one-half mile to the Washington Pass Overlook parking area. From here, a short paved trail takes you through a beautiful subalpine forest to several viewpoints overlooking the dramatic Early Winters Creek Valley. The first portion of the trail is relatively level and accessible, while the remainder of the loop includes stairs and steeper sections. The entire walk is short and easy for most visitors, making this one of the best places along the North Cascades Scenic Highway to enjoy big mountain scenery without taking a long hike.

The highlight of Washington Pass Overlook is the incredible view of Liberty Bell Mountain and the Early Winters Spires, which rise sharply above the highway and valley below. These massive granite peaks are among the most recognizable landmarks in the North Cascades. During fall, alpine larch trees growing near Washington Pass turn brilliant shades of gold, adding even more color to the surrounding mountains.

The overlook area includes restrooms, benches, picnic tables and interpretive signs. Because of the high elevation, snow often remains here into early summer, and Highway 20 itself typically closes during the winter because of heavy snow and avalanche danger.

We feel Washington Pass Overlook is an absolute must-see while driving the North Cascades Scenic Highway. The combination of towering granite peaks, deep valleys and incredible viewpoints makes this one of the most memorable stops anywhere along Highway 20.
