Allen Mountain (1)
Allen Mountain (9,376 feet) is located in the Many Glacier Area, and is a HUGE mountain to climb.  And the views....well....we knew they were going to be awe-inspiring because of the location and height of the mountain, but we never got to see a thing because of a thick cloud cover that sat on the summit the entire time we were up there...

A view of the Mountain...

This is a view of the monstrous Allen Mountain from the summit of Mount Wynn.  We are facing south.  Notice Cracker Lake to it's left, and notice Mount Gould barely showing itself on the right side of Allen.

This is what it looked like on the summit.  Most of the time we couldn't see ten feet in front of us.   The higher we got as we climbed to the summit, the thicker the cloud cover became, but since it was a "dry" cloud cover, we assumed that it would break by the time we summitted, which is usually the case.  Not this time, however.  We waited 2 full hours on the summit to get some views, and it never happened.

If you looked straight up, you could see blue sky, but looking across into the mountains, all we could see was white.  This shot would normally show you an ocean of peaks.  Talk about frustrating!

This is the north ridge of Allen.  To the left is a 2,500 foot vertical wall.  So when it really got clouded in, we didn't do a lot of walking around on the summit- we didn't want to walk literally into thin air!

We waited, and waited, and waited.

We finally bagged it and climbed back down the mountain.  This is a photo of the summit of Allen Mountain later that evening from the Many Glacier Road.   It literally never cleared up the entire day.

That night it snowed.  This is a photo of the west face of Allen Mountain the next morning.  And by the way, this storm was not even in the forecast!

Note:  We climbed Allen again the following summer, and the weather was
                      perfect!
