Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
At the head of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone is the impressive Lower Falls, which is a 308 foot high waterfall that is twice as high as Niagara Falls. (See photo above) This is the largest volume waterfall in the entire Rocky Mountains. The Lower Falls is one of the most celebrated images of Yellowstone National Park, and as you look at it, you'll swear you're looking at a postcard!
Further up stream (see right photo) is the Brink of the Upper Falls of the Yellowstone (109 feet) which is smaller than the Lower Falls but still amazingly beautiful.
These falls are where the amazing Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone begins, and the views get more and more spectacular as you explore this world-renowned canyon. You will enjoy every moment of your time at the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and you will never forget your visit here for the rest of your life!
North Rim Drive
The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone in Yellowstone National Park has two roads, the North Rim Road and the South Rim Road. If you're heading south from Canyon Village along the main highway, in just a few miles you will first reach the North Rim Road. This One-Way Road will give you access to many wonderful overlooks, all of which deserve stopping at. Each of the overlooks give you different views and perspectives of the canyon....
Brink of the Lower Falls
Directly below these visitors is the brink of the mighty Lower Falls of the Yellowstone. If you like heights, you'll love this overlook!
The Brink of the Lower Falls in Yellowstone National Park is absolutely amazing. You are literally on top of this gigantic 300+ foot waterfall!

Lookout Point
Additional North Rim Drive Overlooks include Red Rock Point, Grand View and Inspiration Point. All three of these overlooks are definitely worth stopping for. The views are absolutely spectacular. (Note: Red Rock Point requires a fairly steep walk down the side of the canyon about a quarter of a mile from the road.)
Red Rock Point (Red Rock Trail)
The hike along the Red Rock Trail takes you to this amazing overlook. The hike is a little steep, but if you're up for it, we highly recommend it!

South Rim Drive
The turnout to the South Rim Drive is along the main highway, just a few miles south of Canyon Village. You'll cross the Yellowstone on a beautiful arched bridge (Chittenden Bridge), and then gain access to several terrific stops, such as Uncle Tom's Trail and Artist Point.
Uncle Tom's Trail
The first turn out to your left once you cross the bridge will be Uncle Tom's Trail Parking Lot. This parking lot gives you access to a great view of the Upper Falls, as well as a long, winding trail that has 328 steps that take you down nearly to the bottom of the Lower Falls! Again, if you're willing and able, this is another really neat trail that gives you an extremely unique view of the canyon and the 308 foot Lower Falls. There are several benches along the way and handrails that make this short but steep "trail" a little more comfortable, but remember, once you get all the way to the bottom, you have to come all the way back up. So it's important that you are physically able to take this hike.
There are 328 steps to the bottom (and 328 steps back to the top) of Uncle Tom's Trail, so you'd better be in fairly good physical condition to attempt this hike.

Artist Point
Artist Point is one of the most popular overlooks in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
The South Rim Drive ends at Artist Point, which is a definite "must see" stop on your Yellowstone National Park Vacation. This famous overlook gives you a spectacular view of the Upper Falls, and of the Canyon to the east and to the west. This overlook is one of the most famous of all of the overlooks along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
